Lighting Up Lives: How Children’s Parliament Brought Streetlights to Thonnakuttalli
For years, the village of Thonnakuttalli in Dharmapuri district remained engulfed in darkness after sunset. The absence of proper street lighting posed safety concerns for the villagers, especially for students walking home from school and elders navigating the roads at night. It was an issue that had long been overlooked—until the Bharathiar Neighbourhood Children’s Parliament decided to take action.
During one of their regular meetings, the young parliamentarians identified the problem and discussed its impact on their community. Instead of waiting for adults to solve it, they took the responsibility into their own hands. With determination and a clear plan, they approached the Panchayat President, Mr. Venkettan, and presented their case.
Impressed by their proactive approach and well-reasoned arguments, Mr. Venkettan agreed to support their initiative. Soon, with the help of local authorities and community members, 12 streetlights were installed in the village. What was once a dark and unsafe place transformed into a well-lit neighborhood, ensuring safety and convenience for everyone.
This initiative highlights the power of child-led governance and the impact children can make when given a platform to voice their concerns. The Bharathiar Neighbourhood Children’s Parliament not only solved a critical issue but also set an inspiring precedent for civic engagement and community-driven change.
Their efforts prove that children are not just the future; they are the present—capable of driving real, meaningful transformation in their communities. Today, Thonnakuttalli stands as a shining example of how young leaders can brighten not just streets, but also the future of their villages.
